A basic and one of the most important pieces of any shoot, a stabilizer minimizes video camera movement and makes the shots consistently steady and stable, whether anyone can use a tripod, Steadicam or mount.

As both documentary videographers and wedding videographers know that some functions or events respond well to the handheld style of video making, but it’s much helpful to keep a stabilizer on hand for specific times when videographer need to set up specific shots beforehand.

Proper lighting is too much important to keep the visual quality of the video clips high. “Videographers may want to bring their own lighting equipments, depending on how big a set-up it is, so that no chance of any flicker will arrive. If it’s a DIY project or the crew doesn’t include a lighting director, videographer may need to speak with the venue organizer to get a sense of how much light will work well.

On-camera microphones are super helpful for the work process of videographers. Few mics work better in some certain situations and environments. More often than not, shotgun mics prove to be one of best camcorder tools for sound capture due to their capability to block extra sounds produced from the rear and sides while prioritizing the sound in the front of mic.

Excellent sound production and processing is not limited to just one procedure, technique or piece of equipment, so manipulate and gather as many of them as possible to learn the needs to capture much crisper audio in the circumstances of work.

Although Videography does not have the same artistic rules and regulations as cinematography, it deals with some different and specific stylistic choices, including the type of shots of video that appear in videographer’s work.

Based on the project’s requirements, bring different lenses along with when shoot to show the subject in a different light intensities and keep viewers on the edge of their seats for sure. If possible, use a shot check list to keep track and stay maintained during project.

Since video uses a decent amount of footage, make sure to bring backup memory or SD cards in case the camera runs out of internal storage space.

Learning about shooting a video takes a lot of trial and error process, and can be said is frustrating. When just starting out as a videographer it’s always feel exhausting to come home from a fair share of shoots only to realize that the footage captured is not looking right according to the desire.

9/10 times there is technical issue, not creative – which is positive news as a person can always learn the technical aspects of things. As for the creative side, a videographer either has it or does not! So let’s see which fundamental settings a videographer should know for sure:

Video resolution cites to the overall quality of the video recorded and it is basically based on pixel count. The higher the pixels count of footage will, the better the resolution became and the crisper the footage will. We suggest to set the video resolution to the options of 1920×1080 pixels or higher. Ideally, you’ll set the resolution to 4K or even higher but not every videography cameras have this option.

Aperture can defined by how widely a lens of camera can open or closes. This determines the amount of light allowed to enter the camera through the lens. More importantly it also regulates how much depth of field the camera will capture.

The next setting that needs to focus on is the camera’s frame rate. Its measurement is frames per second (FPS). The rate of FPS is the setting responsible for making up the movement of video. Frame rate setting is an easy one setting for videography to set since the default is 30 FPS. In most cases, this default FPS works well, especially for videos related to YouTube uploading.

The bitrate rate is considered the amount of data collected and captured to build up the resolution within every frame of the captured video and is measured in Mbps (Megabits per second). As higher the bit rate is, as more data is captured, which also means the videographer is working with a larger file or with huge amount of data collected.

Shutter speed is can be defined as by how many fractions of a second the light reaches the sensor of the videography camera. If the shutter speed is too low, the footage will have a creepy, motion blur to it. If camera’s shutter speed is too fast, the footage will have an edgy and intense feeling to it.

ISO controls the sensitivity of the sensor on camera to light. As much lower the ISO value, the darker the image will. If the camera has higher the ISO value, the brighter the image will. However, ISO will add a specific quantity of grain or visual ‘noise’ to the captured footage. Videographer wants to limit the amount of ISO that she/he uses whenever possible.

White balance is the setting used to adjust colors to match the color of the light source so that the actual color objects appears same as they have. White balance, or color temperature, is also a setting that can dramatically change the looks and feel of the shot.

By incorrectly set the white balance setting, the captured footage could end up looking blue. Therefore set color temperature number or Kelvin Number before shooting carefully according to the intensity of light at the subject.
