WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY?

WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY?

Technically, photography is the art of generating an image by capturing and processing light using a sensor or film. But the main motive of photography is to capture moments and share them with others. It’s quite simple, but the action itself is capable of converting perceptions of people.

A photo can have an intensive meaning and can tell thousands of important stories about specific incidents. One of the best examples is photos taken during specific war times. There are many mind-boggling photos circulated during the war. Some photos exhibits the winners’ glorious moment while the others show the absolute devastation of native people caught in the crossfire.

But that’s not all about photography; it has the nature of having multiple interpretations of any specific single photo, especially in modern photography and art. Everyone has their own quickly produced perception when it comes to judging a photograph or an image. Some see the photo as a bigger “picture,” while others can take it as a resemblance to life, transforming it into those “wise” quotes about anything.

As an individual widen his/her knowledge about photography, aesthetics, processes and techniques, one can unveil sometimes even more hidden meanings behind a single photograph.

DO A FANCY CAMERA IS INDEED?

As Smartphone cameras get more capable of doing many different tasks, sales of dedicated cameras like SLR or DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are crashing. For most of the common people it just doesn’t make sense to own a dedicated camera, but for starting photo enthusiasts, it still might a matter of perfection.

If a person is planning to become a photographer, the decision would be easy. However, when it comes to spending hard earned money on a hobby one is only starting out with, she/he will need to spend a lot of time asking himself/herself if it’s a good idea to get a dedicated camera or not. And if person finally decide to go for it then there’s the will be a whole new dilemma which-one-to-buy and things get even more complicated.

Dedicated cameras are not cheap at all. If someone is thinking about buying a camera for photography, she/he needs to make sure its necessity. Otherwise it’s just like buying an expensive drawer ornament.

BASIC GEAR NEEDED TO START PHOTOGRAPHY:

BASIC GEAR NEEDED TO START PHOTOGRAPHY

Camera:

There’s a lot of debate in online convocations as to whether a professional can use this camera or that camera. I mean cameras are just cameras. Whether you have an Olympus, Nikon, Sony or Panasonic, they all can record images.

When thinking about the gadgets required starting a photography business, she/he needs to consider their own needs. High-end commercial photographers might need a hyper-spectral medium-format system, but she/he might only need a basic small and light crop frame mirrorless camera.

When choosing a camera and camera gear for a person, decide about needs of person and the needs of ideal potential clients. How fast does the autofocus of the camera need to be? How much high camera’s ISO power does a person really need? Which camera feels comfortable in hands? Will person be able to carry it all day?

In the end, a multi-spectral full-frame DSLR camera is a beautiful machine, but is it the best tool for that person? Consider the type of photography one will be shooting — landscape photography vs. fashion photography — before makes any selection.

Lenses:

Most likely, a photographer started this full-time journey with one or two kit of zoom camera lenses. These are a flourishing tool for learning and will give anybody an idea for their preferences and requirements. There are few ways to look into new camera lenses and make sure about buying the right ones.

Camera lenses are much costlier than any accessories of cameras, but they are also the equipment that will stay with the person. We recommend choosing lenses very carefully and renting them before buying them if that is an option. This way a person can test different types of lenses, like wide angle lenses, before spending on the right tools.

Lighting:

Light is a very important raw material, and thus should specifically be included in the list of photography equipment for starting a successful photography business. Even if individual is not a studio photographer, she/he may need to spend money on a speed light, light stand or a reflector.

Unless she/he has been doing this for some time already, we do not recommend spending heavily into lighting right away. Rent it and grab in store or some shop pickup wherever possible until she/he know exactly the level of quality and power required. Those Profoto B1s are fabulous lights, but one may not need all of them just yet.

All other equipments are optional, but can be very helpful:

1. A tripod: It can be great friend for a landscape photographer.

2. Bags: A shoulder bag is must for street photography; a rolling bag will be good for studio photography, a technically designed hiking backpack is a good option for landscape photography, and so on.

3. Memory cards: Choose memory cards in the range of 64-128 GB to start. Get a fast card (measured in MB/second) if wish to shoot bursts of photos, since a camera’s memory will clear faster.

4. Extra batteries: Get at least one or two spare battery for the camera to start. Generally off-brand batteries are cheaper than high-brand batteries, although they may not long last or maintain usability with future cameras.

5. Polarizing filter: This equipment is a big one, especially for landscape photographers. Never get a cheaper polarizer because it will harm the image quality. For general, we recommend the Black and White (B+W) Kaesemann filter (of the same thread size as your lens).

6. Flash: Flashes can be costlier than other accessories of cameras, and a photographer might need to buy a separate transmitter and receiver if she/he wants to use a flash off-camera. But for categories like portrait photography or macro photography, they’re all important.

7. Cleaning kit: The top item of the equipment kit of a photographer is a microfiber cloth to keep the front of your lens clean and clear. Also get a rocket blower to keep your camera sensor dust free more easily.

8. Other equipment: There are numerous other photography accessories available in the market, from remote shutter releases to GPS attachments, printers, and many more. Don’t take tension about these at first; a photographer will realize over time if she/he need anyone of them.

THE THREE FUNDAMENTAL CAMERA SETTINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

This paragraph aims to help beginners understand the inter-relation of three essential factors of digital photography. Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings of the camera are the three most important settings when it comes to exposure of the image caught:

1. Aperture is the size of the front opening of the lens through which light enters into the camera body to expose the shot.

2. Shutter speed is the time taken by the camera to make light allowed entering through the lens for exposure of the image.

3. ISO stands for “International Organization for Standardization,” that is an establishment that standardized a system to measure the sensitivity of film rolls. ISO is the amount of sensitivity of camera toward the light entering into the lens during photography.

The higher the ISO setting of the camera, the higher the sensitivity will be. The lower the ISO setting of camera, the lower the sensitivity will be. Too much ISO sensitivity causes the problem to photo to be grainy and washed out. Lower ISO can cause the problem to a photo to be very dark or the colors to look faded.

The photographer needs to make a good enough balance between these three factors in order to get a perfect shot of anything that has perfect brightness and colors. The quantity and intensity of light integrate with the amount of time that light is allowed to enter makes photograph a hero or zero.
